Det finnes knapt strøm eller annen infrastruktur der, og naturmiljøet er alt annet enn gjestmildt. Her er vintrene iskalde, somrene kokvarme og kraftige vinder fører til at store mengder sand virvles opp. Likevel trekkes mennesker hit for å leve et liv på siden av samfunnet.
Forfatter Ted Conover tilbrakte flere år i dette vakre, røffe landskapet. Her bodde, jobbet og samhandlet han med de lokale beboerne. Resultatet ble den kritikerroste boken Cheap Land Colorado: Off-Gridders at America’s Edge, som forsøker å forklare hvor den amerikanske drømmen ble av.
Vi gleder oss til å få besøk av Conover i biblioteket og høre hans foredrag: «From Cowboys to Malcontents: Alienation on the American Frontier.»

Om Conover
Conover er professor emeritus ved Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute ved New York University og forfatter av seks sakprosabøker. Han er best kjent for Newjack: Guarding Sing Sing (2000), hvor han gikk undercover som fengselsbetjent ved det berømte fengselet Sing Sing. Newjack var finalist til Pulitzerprisen og vant National Book Critics Circle Award for generell sakprosa.

In Colorado's San Luis Valley, you can buy a piece of land for less than $5,000.
There is hardly any electricity or other infrastructure, and the natural environment is anything but hospitable. Despite harsh winds, roaring heat and cold winters, people are drawn to build and live there, away from mainstream society.
Writer and professor, Ted Conover has done just this. He spent years living and working on the outskirts of America, aiming to understand people's estrangements from the American Dream. The result was the critically acclaimed book Cheap Land Colorado: Off-Gridders at America’s Edge.
We are excited to welcome Conover to the library and invite you to join us for his talk: “From Cowboys to Malcontents: Alienation on the American Frontier.” It will be followed by a Q&A.
The talk will be introduced by Sociology professor Ugo Corte, Department of Media and Social Sciences, University of Stavanger.
About Conover
Conover is Professor Emeritus at the Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute at New York University and the author of six books of narrative nonfiction. He is best known for Newjack: Guarding Sing Sing (2000), for which he worked as a correctional officer for nearly one year. Newjack was finalist for the Pulitzer Prize and won the National Books Critics Circle Award for general nonfiction.
